BUYER'S TIPS
With all the various models and attributes, it can be intimidating and overwhelming to
choose a pressure washer for your business. Here are some tips to help you along:
- Horsepower is the best indicator of how much work your machine can do. When selecting a machine, buy one with enough horsepower to deliver the gallon per minute and pressure you need.
- The more gallons per minute (GPM) your machine can pump, the faster you can get the job done.
- Belt drive machines typically last longer than direct drive machines.
- Check the little details, such as switches that are easy to flip, connections that are easy to put together and wands and hoses that are comfortable to use.
- Pressure washers will need maintenance and repair. Make sure major components such as pump check valves and burner parts are accessible.
- Buy pressure washers with name-brand components. For example, most pressure washer pumps are manufactured by General, while car wash pumps are most often CAT brand.
- Make sure replacement parts are readily available for the machine you choose. While Express Pressure Washers, INC sells quality machines, parts on pressure washers do wear out over time.
- Check water supply and quality at your facility. Water quality affects pressure washer wear.
- Check with an expert to make sure your electrical wiring is up-to-date and adequate for the unit you purchase.
- If the pressure washer will be used and stored in harsh conditions, consider stainless steel.
- Ask your sales representative if a cold water washer will work for you. Hot water coils in pressure washers are one of the most expensive components, and hot water washers have additional safety concerns.
- If you buy a hot water unit, ask questions about the coil. Look for a coil made of boiler-grade pipe, not tubing, and at least ½" ID. Also make sure the coil is long enough to be efficient and safe and that the coils are not wound too tightly, interfering with combustion.
- For hot water units, make sure the safety pressure relief valve is not located on the coil outlet; hot water could spray in a malfunction, causing injury.
- Ask your sales representative about a Scaltrol system. The Scaltrol units will protect against mineral scale, and staining.
- It never hurts to double-check the manufacturer's claims. For example, check with the pump manufacturer to see if the pump used on the model you're considering has the features the pressure washer manufacturer claims it has.
- If you need your machine to be portable, look carefully at its features. For example, check the tires to make sure they roll easily - and will continue to roll after acquiring dirt. Also make sure the unit is not top heavy. Portable units can save you money in maintenance and repair, since you can bring it to the dealer.
- Buy a pressure washer built for your needs. A small washer for home use would be inadequate and inefficient for industrial use. If you purchase an inadequate unit, the extra time spent on cleanup and the cost of repairs will likely be greater than the expense of buying the right unit in the first place.
